Teething and Weaning: A match made in hell? By Chomp Baby

Teething and weaning – two significant milestones in a baby’s development that often occur at the same time– can sometimes feel like a cruel joke to both little ones and us as their parents. As babies embark on their journey of solid foods, their emerging teeth can bring discomfort and a new-found fussiness. We’re here to guide you through this potentially tumultuous period with practical tips and insights to help.

When does baby teething start?

Teething often begins around six months of age (though can start earlier), coinciding with the recommended start of your weaning adventures… As babies start exploring the world of solid foods, their tiny teeth make their debut, creating a dynamic and sometimes challenging combination.

What does baby teething look like during weaning

Baby teething symptoms may look like

  • Excessive Drooling: Teething stimulates saliva production, leading to increased drooling. This can be messier than usual during mealtimes.

  • Irritability: Sore gums can make little ones irritable, affecting their willingness to try new foods.

  • Changes in Appetite: Discomfort may lead to changes in their appetite, making mealtimes trickier. Even the most adventurous of eaters may change their habits during this period.

Tips for Teething Troubles During Weaning

  • Gentle Gum Massage: Using a clean finger or a soft silicone toothbrush, gently massage your baby’s gums before meals to alleviate discomfort.

  • Chilled Teething Toys: Place safe teething toys in the refrigerator before offering them to your baby. The coolness can provide relief to sore gums. Did you know, our silicone baby utensils can serve this exact purpose? Great for chewy soothing relief whilst getting your baby used to holding a fork and spoon.

  • The art of distraction: Teething can make mealtime a bit challenging. To ease the process, introduce distractions such as colourful books, their favourite toys, colourful tableware or playful bibs to keep your baby engaged.

  • Opt for Softer Foods: During teething episodes, consider offering softer, cooler foods that are easier on those tender gums.

Cooling Foods: A Soothing Solution

Chilled foods can be a game-changer for teething babies. Not only do they provide gentle relief, but they also introduce new flavours and textures at a time when baby might be pickier.

  • Frozen Banana Slices: Rich in potassium, bananas offer a sweet and soothing treat. Freeze banana slices for a teething-friendly snack.

  • Chilled Cucumber Sticks: Cucumbers are hydrating and gentle on sore gums. Keep them in the refrigerator for a refreshing teething aid.

  • Yoghurt frozen lollies: Yoghurt is an excellent source of calcium and probiotics, contributing to both dental and digestive health. Create homemade yoghurt lollies by blending yoghurt with your baby’s favourite fruits and freezing the mixture in moulds

  • Did you know our silicone tableware can be put in the freezer to help prepare any frozen snacks for your little one!

Great First Foods for Toothless Wonders

Not all babies sprout teeth at the same rate, and some may still be toothless during the weaning process. This is absolutely nothing to worry about, babies can still start their weaning adventures with most foods and you’d be surprised at how strong their gums are! Here are some first food suggestions for toothless wonders:

  • Avocado: Packed with healthy fats and a creamy texture, avocado is an excellent choice for babies just starting on solids.

  • Sweet Potato: cut into spears and roasted until soft, sweet potatoes provide a nutritious and easily digestible option for toothless babies.

  • Porridge: Easy to prepare and gentle on the stomach, oatmeal is a versatile first food that can be customised with fruits or a dash of cinnamon (avoid honey until babe is past 12 months)

  • Banana: naturally sweet and soft, making them a perfect introductory food for babies without teeth. Other great fruit options include; mangoes, peaches and berries (all cut appropriately)

A game of patience

Teething periods can vary significantly among babies. While some may experience a few weeks of discomfort, others might have a more prolonged teething process extending beyond their first year. As parents, it’s crucial to be patient and kind to yourselves during this journey. Recognise that each baby is unique, and the teething phase is only temporary (as extended as it may feel!)
